In October of 2017, J. Fletcher Creamer & Son Inc. was awarded a contract to repair the existing seawall, as well as build over 5,500 linear feet of new seawalls over a five-mile stretch of the New Jersey Shore. The Sea Bright and Monmouth Beach Seawall Project took place from August 2017 through March 2019. In this time period, Creamer placed over 100,000 tons of capstone (roughly 200,000 1/2 ton boulders), over 43,000 tons of core, and mattstone while working with local municipalities to make sure that local businesses were fully operational and beaches were open during the summer months.
To place the new seawall stone, Creamer needed to devise a system to dewater the beach with the ocean only a 100’ away. To do this, a complex dewatering system was installed, allowing Creamer to control the water 20’ lower than sea level and place various grades of stone up to the large capstone that is seen above grade.
Creamer battled the Atlantic Ocean and the unrelenting storms and tides. Crews began the construction of the seawall by excavating approximately 22’ below the existing beach grades and 12’ below mean high water. To work in the dry, a series of deep wells were installed approximately 30’ on center, penetrating 5’ below the bottom of excavation. Creamer also worked closely with the NJDEP to protect local wild and plant life, including endangered and protected species. Two emergency vehicle crossovers, a timber boardwalk, multiple pedestrian crossovers, and many other streetscape items were constructed to improve access to the beaches for the residents now protected by the new seawall. By completing this project, Creamer was able to help people enjoy the beach and its surrounding community for years to come.
Other highlights included:
-
- The excavation of 224,000 cy of sand
- 151,000 tons of stone placed on 128,000 sq. ft. of filter fabric
- 374 timber piles installed
