The commitment to Safety at J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. was made a long time ago and we are successful today because of the relentless efforts to improve every day.
J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. maintains a comprehensive and focused safety program. Our corporate safety department includes a Risk Manager, as head of the department, seven full time field safety professionals and three full time administrative personnel based in the corporate office in Hackensack, New Jersey.
Our safety professionals visit projects around the country on a daily basis to help foster a safe work environment in accordance with OSHA standards and company policies. They are available 24 /7 to support the vast array of projects contracted by J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. These highly trained personnel are very visible and available. With our safety professionals leading the way, we consider every employee a member of the safety team.
The Company provides safety training to every employee. That training begins at the time of employment when, as part of the hiring process, they are required to go through an orientation process that addresses the standards and expectations as it relates to safety on a daily basis. The orientation also provides the opportunity to review our company Basic Safety Handbook and Corporate Drug and Alcohal Policy. The orientation concludes with employees receiving their hard hat, safety glasses and safety vest, all of which are required to be worn at all times while working.
The Company offers numerous focused safety training classes throughout the year for both management and tradesmen. There are corporate ‘safety days’ each year typically held on a Saturday where multiple training classes are offered. They include refresher courses on some of the risks and exposures we face each day like trenching, shoring, excavation, traffic control, fall protection, defensive driving, load securement, rigging, first aid, means and methods of safe construction practices, etc. Individual classes are given by our Risk Manager and safety professionals who are all certified OSHA Outreach Trainers. We also have relationships with fire and first aid personnel, insurance representatives and other safety professionals. In some instances OSHA personnel are invited to attend and participate. Some of the training is practical hands on instructional type training such as shoring installation, fall arrest systems, rigging and signalman, hand tool operation and defensive driving among other topics. Safety days include a guest speaker who may tell his/her own personal story of being injured in a work related incident.
As part of the safety program at J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. each foreman is obligated to perform a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) each day prior to performing a given task. He evaluates the tasks at hand for the day, creates the JHA and reviews all the tasks, risks and controls to reduce injury or damage with the crew. The JHA is a great tool to insure all members of the crew are on the same page and in turn creates a safe work plan for the day. Tool box talks are also required of each foreman to be held weekly. The topics are standardized, but job specifics are used accordingly.
The safety department is in attendance at each in house pre-construction meeting that includes the Project Manager and other members of the project team. It is at this meeting that any questions regarding safety or any circumstances that are unique to the project are discussed and addressed.
At J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. everyone participates in working safely.
