| The New Jersey Department of Transportation awarded the Route 1 Section 6V project to J. Fletcher Creamer and Son, Inc. in the fall of 2008. After a few months of planning and purchasing all of our materials and subcontractors, JFC started construction in March 2009. The overall project consists of many different aspects of construction that we perform on a daily basis throughout the state. The main aspects that make up this project are as follows: 76,000cy of roadway excavation, 80,000sy of DGA, 70,000 tons of asphalt, 11,500lf of drainage pipe from 15” thru 42”, 107 drainage structures, 18,000lf of curb, 2,400lf of median barrier, 6,500lf of guide rail, 1,100cy of concrete, 207,000lbs of rebar, 52 piles, 8,630sf of MSE wall panels, and 3,400sf of temporary sheeting. In order to accomplish all of the work items in this contract, the project was broken into 8 separate phases of construction in order to maintain traffic flow through the heavily traveled roadway. The initial phase of the project consisted of clearing all of the existing trees within the project limits as well the relocation of the overhead electric and construction of diversionary roads. All of the trees were cut down. JFC installed the new electric manholes and underground duct banks. The diversion roads were constructed to allow traffic from the Route 1 mainline to be diverted onto parallel roadways that tie into the main line north and south of the existing bridge. With winter rapidly approaching, JFC and the NJDOT met and decided that in order to gain time on our project schedule, we would work the job through the winter shut down period of December 15th 2009 through March 15th 2010. We projected to pour the bridge deck in the beginning of April 2010, which we were able to meet even with the harsh winter storms we had to deal with as well as the failure of the existing north bound bridge structure. On January 19th 2010, during the construction of the south bound portion of the bridge our project superintendent noticed that one of the support piers on the north bound portion of the existing bridge had shifted. The NJDOT was notified immediately and the roadway was closed to traffic. JFC along with our subcontractor Archer Steel installed the temporary support around the clock and had the roadway reopened to traffic on January 21st. Even with additional obstacles in our way, we opened the south bound portion of the bridge to traffic on June 5th 2010. Currently all of the traffic has been removed off of the north bound portion of the bridge, and we are prepping the roadway for the demolition of the bridge as well as the drainage installation. The gas main that runs over the north bound portion of the bridge is currently being relocated to allow for the demolition. Once the gas main is relocated, we will be able to demo the bridge and start the construction of the new bridge. We are anticipating on the demolition of the bridge to take place at the end of July 2010. With the extra efforts of the field staff, as well as the re-sequencing of some of the phases of the work, the project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2011. |
