Water Mains
Baltimore Gas & Electric Company is the main utility supplier for gas and electricity in Baltimore, Maryland. Their Spring Garden facility just off I-95 in downtown Baltimore is where they store and distribute liquid natural gas to thousands of customers throughout Maryland. If you have ever driven south on I-95, you would have seen the three large white tanks that store LNG rising above the elevated sections of the highway less than a mile from downtown Baltimore. In the Summer of 2007, J. Fletcher Creamer & Son was awarded the first portion of phase one for a contract to install approximately 1,800 feet of new water lines, with new valves, fire hydrants and services. In the Summer of 2008 the second portion of phase one for 3,120 feet of new mains, valves and hydrants was awarded. The new lines ranged in diameter from 6-inch through 16-inch. Some of the mains were for domestic water supply, but more than half of the new mains were for a fire suppression water line that is fed from two pumping stations on the property. One of the many unique aspects of this contract was the fact that the site was constructed around 1920 and was built where a chemical plant had once stood. The soils contained many chemicals such as benzene, tar, arsenic and lead. The JFC crews working on the project had to undergo a 40-hour hazardous material training course before work could begin. Over 2,700 tons of contaminated soils and over 100,000 gallons of contaminated water were removed from the site for proper treatment and disposal at locations in York, Pennsylvania and Newark, Delaware. In addition to the contract for the installation of the new water lines, JFC was also awarded a contract to replace the existing fire pumps and associated valves and piping in the two pump stations on the site. One pump was diesel powered and the other was an electric pump, both capable of pumping over 4,000 gallons per minute through the fire suppression lines if ever needed. The new lines and pumps were tested in March of 2010. Location: City of Baltimore, Maryland
