The New Jersey Turnpike is one of the busiest roads in our nation. It is part of the main transportation artery that runs up and down the eastern seaboard. The Turnpike Authority (NJTA) has begun a massive project to widen the currently outdated three lane highway into a modern six lane super highway from Exit 6, in Mansfield Township, north to Exit 9, in New Brunswick. With this project being so large, it will be broken up into a number of different contracts. Work began early last fall, and the Authority hopes to have the project completed within five years. Our scope of work truly shows the diversity of our company. Our subcontract consists of underground utility relocation, sign structures, and guide rail.
JFC began our work in late October, 2009 with the underground utility relocation. In order for the NJTA to widen the current bridge going over U.S. Route 206 in Bordentown, PSE&G’s overhead electrical transmission lines had to be relocated underground. JFC set two inline manholes, inside dimensions measuring 12’ x 6’ x 8’, in the northbound lanes of Route 206, while maintaining traffic flow. We then connected the two manholes with 650 feet of 9ea 5” PVC concrete encased ductbank, and then we directionally drilled 2 ea 5” HDPE conduits a total of 600 feet underneath Route 206 for riser conduits. By utilizing the directional drill, we eliminated the need to close lanes on Route 206 and also completed the riser sections much faster than open trenching.
JFC mobilized our Bauer rig onsite towards the middle of Spring 2010, and immediately began work on the 10 sign structure foundations. The sign foundations consist of a total of 600’ of 30” diameter caissons, 280’ of 54” diameter caissons, and then 20 pedestals that are supported by the caissons. |
